If you’ve seen this product in a store and wondered about what it tastes like, check out this Skinny Butcher Crispy Chicken review!
Spoiler alert: there’s actually no chicken in it! As a vegan, I give my thoughts, and give some thoughts on the ingredients and nutrition (I just can’t help myself as a dietitian 😉 ).

What Is Skinny Butcher?
Skinny Butcher is a fairly new brand that sells plant based ‘chicken.’ products.
Their products are made from plant proteins, like wheat gluten and pea protein isolate. They don’t actually contain real chicken!
They have several product including:
- Crazy Crispy Chick’N Patties
- Crazy Crispy Chick’N Nuggets
- Crazy Crispy Chick’N Breasts
In this article, I’ll just review the Chick’N breasts.
Where Can I buy It?
The Skinny Burcher website has a locator tab where you can see where certain products may be available in the US.
I bought them at Costco, however inventory will vary by location, and I’m not sure if there were still available when I went back to that same Costco!
Skinny Butcher Crispy Chicken Review
Taste
Taste Score: 9/10
I know this might sound cliché, but it actually tastes like chicken (at least, it tastes alot like how I remember chicken tastes)!
But seriously, its got that savory taste with a meaty texture.
The outer coating does get crispy in the oven. The breading is well seasoned and adds a unami flavor.
There is a lot of breading, so if you aren’t into that, just be aware!
My husband also really enjoyed it as well, and also thought it tasted similar to chicken (caveat- he is vegetarian).
For a video of me taste testing these, check out my Youtube Short below!
Price
I found these at Costco, and they cost $13.99 USD for 8 Chick’N breasts (about 113 grams each in weight).
That’s about $1.75 per Cick’N breast which is fairly expensive for a plant based burger, but also larger and higher in protein than several others on the market.
I was hard pressed to find prices at other stores when I looked online, so my guess is that the price will vary.
Cooking Level
I simply baked these in the oven. So if you know how to read instructions and use a oven, it should be quite simple!
As an alternative, you can use an air fryer like the instructions indicate in the picture above.
Pretty easy to make in my books! (and seems sturdy enough to make ahead if you meal prep!)
Portion
This portion looks huge (see picture).
I actually cut it in half and saved the rest for later. The full chick’N breast seemed to big for some of my ‘standard sized’ buns, but might fit a vegan bagel or kaiser roll with less spilling out on the sides.
Even though I cut it in half, I was satisfied with a half portion! So if you like these, I would assume their patties (which are smaller in size) are also tasty- but I haven’t tried those.
Ingredients
Here is a listing of the ingredients as copied from the picture on the back of my Skinny Butcher Crazy Crispy Chick’N breast package (pictured above):
“Ingredients: water, enriched wheat flour (niacin, reduced iron, thiamine mononitrate, riboflavin, folic acid), corn starch, textured wheat protein, coconut oil, wheat gluten, pea protein isolate, Contains 2% or less of: bamboo fiber, salt, maltodextrin, yeast, methylcellulose, canola oil, spices, dried onion, natural flavor, dried garlic, paprika (for color), baking soda, sunflower oil, hydrolyzed corn protein, dried vinegar.”
This product is not gluten free – just in case that is important to you!
Breading makes up a large portion of the ingredients, which was something I noticed when trying them (there is alot of breading!)
The majority of the protein comes from high plant based protein sources like pea protein isolate and wheat gluten.
Nutrition
Here is a listing of some of the nutrition facts as copied from the above picture (taken from the back of my Skinny Butcher Crazy Crispy Chick’N breast package):
- Calories: 340
- Saturated fat: 7 grams
- Sodium: 720 milligrams
- Carbohydrates: 25 grams
- Fiber: 6 grams
- Added sugars: 0 grams
- Protein: 15 grams
- Iron: 2.3 milligrams
Just as you might suspect, these have lots of protein! Many plant based burgers do not have this amount of protein so it really stands out (of note, some burgers, like Impossible Burger, and Beyond Burger have similar or more protein).
This item is also high in fiber, (for comparison, 100 grams of cooked chickpeas has about 6 grams of fiber as well(1)!
Of note, for those who track their carbohydrates, this product does contain over 1 carbohydrate choice per their American Diabetes Association- where one carburate choice is 15 grams of carbs (this product has over that at 25 grams of carbohydrates) (2).
Just needed to point that out, in case you just assumed it wouldn’t have carbohydrates!
Finally, this product is considered a high sodium, and high in saturated fat.
Generally speaking, we want to keep saturated fat low, and be mindful of sodium intake for heart health.

Thanks for this review. I never heard of plant-based ‘chicken.’ products. I do buy the “burgers” plant-based and they are pretty good. I will be looking for these.
